This intermediate level unit consists of 9 lesson plans and was written by three university education students at the University of Regina. Investigating Patterns: Symmetry and Tessellations This introduction investigates plane patterns whose symmetries are translations, glide reflections, and rotations. This activity has students create several tesselations using different methods and provides numerous student examples. Graphics Activity - Tesselations Using ClarisworksĪ culminating activity for secondary students after studying polygons. Some of the illustrations were done using Tessel Mania software. Most of the drawings will be based on a tessellation or tiled design.įrom a summer geometry class, this student illustrates the sequence of instruction for tesselation by using basic geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles and hexagons, then begins to enhance basic tesselations with colour and graphics. These applications work with a mathematical formula that draws a graphic representation. Ten pieces of software are available to use on-line. The materials focus on transformation, rotation, reflection, glide and symmetry. Included are a teacher's guide and resources, prerequisites and materials, and a student lesson. It is designed to help reinforce the concept of symmetry and develop observation and visualization skills by providing an opportunity to create symmetric shapes and bugs.įour secondary math teachers wrote these grade 7-10 materials during a summer workshop.
